Chest Pains and Cupcakes
Since the beginning of the new year, I have been having these pains in my chest that sometimes cause me a great deal of fear. My doctor said it is nothing to worry about, just gas pressure, and suggested Prilosec. The local hospital help line said the same thing, and since I do not have a medical degree I guess I have no choice but to go with them on this one.
Through trial and error I discovered soda was the greatest cause of the pains, so I cut it out completely. Every once in a while I forget, take a sip of Coke, and spend the remainder of the day feeling like my rib cage is going to crack open, while at the same time wondering if something is trying to burrow out of my back using a tiny, very dull spoon.
So, I have had to make some dietary changes and really think about what I'm going to eat. Thank goodness some of the things I really love are still good to me....for now...
Due to limited time, and funds, I have not done as much cooking/baking as of late. However, last night my daughter and I decided it was time to play around with some cupcakes, especially since Halloween is right around the corner. The great thing about Halloween themed food is that the weirder looking it is the better. So even a small child can put a glob of icing on something and say it is a monster, and everyone just nods in agreement. I won't point out which ones I did, just in case that theory doesn't prove true for adults.
My six year old even wanted to tackle designing a cake by herself. I thought the result was rather cute:
Now that fall is here I'm going to try my hand at some cold weather staples and hopefully they will be chest friendly. I've been faithfully watching Food Network, trying to get ideas and thinking of ways to modify them so that a picky eater like myself, with no refined palate, limited resources and a shoe string budget, can enjoy them.
I dearly love Ina Garten, Ree Drummond, Trisha, and Giada. But I can't help but wonder if they could still pull off what they do if they only had one small cupboard, $60 to feed three people and two dogs for 7 days, plus homeschool while working a 32 hour week outside the home?
People like that don't get shows. Not glamorous enough.
